Frequently asked questions.

What is clinical counselling?

Clinical counselling is a process that helps individuals enhance their mental, emotional, and physical well-being while fostering positive relationships with themselves and others. Establishing a trusting and comfortable rapport between client and counsellor is essential, as counselling often delves into topics of distress and discomfort. Thus, clients are encouraged to ask questions or provide feedback on the counselling process at any time.

Can I talk to a counsellor before scheduling an initial session?

Absolutely. We're happy to connect with you before your first session. We can address any questions you may have about our services and determine if one of our counselors is the right fit for you. Lakeside Clinical Counselling offers a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation for clients.

Is everything I discuss with my counsellor confidential?

Information shared during counselling sessions remains confidential and will not be disclosed to anyone without your informed, voluntary, and written consent. However, there are exceptions to client confidentiality, including situations where there's a concern for your safety or the safety of others, suspicion or disclosure of abuse involving vulnerable persons, or when records are subpoenaed by court order.

What can I expect during my first session?

During the initial session, we'll review key aspects of counselling, such as informed consent, confidentiality, and your rights and responsibilities. We'll also explore your personal history, reasons for seeking counselling, and discuss the changes you wish to see in your life.

Are services covered by my Extended Health Plan?

Many extended health benefit plans cover counselling fees. You can check with your benefits provider to see if they cover services provided by Registered Clinical Counselors (RCC) or Registered Social Workers (RSW). We are able to direct bill some providers. When we are not able to direct bill, clients are provided with a receipt and are responsible for seeking reimbursement from their plan providers.

Can a Social Worker provide counselling?

Yes, we have counsellors on our team who hold master's degrees in social work (MSW). MSW programs equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to provide clinical counselling services. Our MSW counsellors undergo rigorous training in various therapeutic approaches and frameworks, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic theory, and humanistic approaches. They also complete practicum placements where they conduct clinical assessments and evaluations to inform therapeutic interventions.

Completing an MSW program is a prerequisite for pursuing licensure as a Registered Social Worker, which involves meeting specific clinical practice hours, passing licensing exams, and engaging in ongoing professional development. Our MSW counsellors are fully licensed Registered Social Workers with the BCCSW.

One advantage of working with a registered social worker is their status as a registered health professional, allowing their services to be exempt from GST and eligible for tax deductions.
